It’s all about how you feel. All buildings affect us in some way. We want ours to capture your interest, to make you feel responsible about the way they are built, and be happy to inhabit them. We work to make them greener, smarter, efficient, and friendly.

We start by being good listeners, not biased towards a particular style, but open to finding the most appropriate solution for each situation. We stress good bones over fashionable facades, comfort and efficiency over grandeur, and the effect that our buildings have on the people who use them every day over the impressions they make in a few photographs.

Well-proportioned, coherent spaces appeal to the senses as well as the psyche. We take into account all the qualities that make a building exceptional: what it says about its time, its purpose, and its location; the way it responds to its site; the ways it captures views and light; the way traffic, heat, water, and waste flow through it; how well it utilizes the resources assigned to it. The way a building affects people in twenty years is more important than whether it is on the cutting edge today.

We design for the Maine environment with attention to environmental and energy issues. During the oil embargo of the 1970’s, we designed well-insulated passive solar and wood-heated houses and the original active solar-heated headquarters for the Maine Audubon Society in Falmouth. Now, the methods are similar, but there are more tools available. We are LEED accredited, with experience in solar, geothermal, and super-insulated construction. The measure of a good building includes information on all the materials and methods that go into it as well as its energy features. New technology is readily available, but pairing it with a good design is difficult. We offer the experience and skill to use it wisely.
