This design for a retail development along U.S. Route One in Wiscassett uses familiar and stylized forms to better organize and refine a familiar type of development. While the parking lot fronts the building, smaller buildings are placed at the corners near the street edge to strengthen the streetscape and suggest a parking “court”. The larger retail/mixed-use façade provides protection from the elements and creates a landscaped forecourt large enough for gatherings. Playful, but strongly organized, façade elements enliven the pedestrian experience and create a memorable image on a well-travelled route.
